Project Description

The Human Proteome Organization (HUPO) is an international collection of investigators committed to the ultimate goal of mapping the human proteome. Unlike the genome, the proteome varies substantially between organ and cell type. Thus, an initial goal for HUPO is to coordinate organ/tissue specific proteome projects, including the Plasma Proteome Project (PPP). Our laboratory is a HUPO Designated Laboratory and a participating member of the PPP. Using a multistep proteomic platform involving native and denatured protein separation followed by LC/MS/MS analysis, we are examining the plasma proteome on the basis of analytically-defined subproteomes. The ultimate goal is to combine our findings with those of other designated labs in the PPP to develop the comprehensive human plasma proteome. In addition, future goals also include applying technical lessons learned from the PPP to other human tissue proteomes.
